The Wedding - Bob Kurtz and Pat Schoenewald - August 18, 1954

August 18th, was the anniversary for my Mother and Father.  So I thought I would share a little about their courtship story and their wedding day.

Pat Schoenewald lived in Nyssa, Oregon with Mona Cruson and Robert Kurtz lived in Adrian, Oregon in a cabin by the Snake River where you crossed to go into Idaho.

 The Courtship:

Pat had babysitting jobs while looking for a more stable job and Robert (Bob) was helping his father on the farm as well as other jobs around the valley.

Meta Kurtz was pregnant with her third child and needed to go to the hospital for contractions in June of 1954.  It wasn't time for the baby yet and Meta's doctor wanted her to stay off her feet as much as possible so she hired Pat to stay and watch the other two children.  Meta's husband, Dud, was a farmer and could not take any time off.

One day, Dud's brother, Bob, came over for a visit and met Pat.  He asked Pat if she wanted to go swimming at Snavely’s hot springs since he had to take groceries to a lady close by there so they made a date.  He was late picking her up, he had gotten stuck on the Island in the middle of the Snake River. They had a great time.  Bob made a date with Pat about a week later but he showed up every night.  Meta had her child on the 19th of July. By this time, Bob and Pat had fallen in love and decided to marry in August of that same year.  They didn't think there was any reason why they should wait. Pat was 23 and Bob was 31 years old.

 The Wedding:

Pat's parents lived in Ashland, Oregon so the wedding was to take place there in the home of Pat's parent’s house at 263 North Second Street.  The Maid of Honor was Phyllis Hollingsworth McCart, Pat's cousin and the Best Man was Dudley Kurtz (Bob's youngest brother).  Darlene, Pat's sister, was the flower girl. Mona, Pat's best friend, played the piano. Officiating the service was the Rev. Everett McGee.

The Bride wore a ballerina length tulle over taffeta gown with a fingertip illusion net veil held with a wreath of valley lilies and white roses. Her bouquet of white roses and carnations. The matron of honor was dressed in blue taffeta and carrying pink daisies tied with blue ribbon.

The Bride’s sister, Darlene, sang “Love Shall Abide”, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Elmer Cruson who also played the wedding march.

Mr. and Mrs. Kurtz left immediately after the reception for a honeymoon trip which included the Oregon Caves and Crater Lake.

Their First Home:

The married couple made their first home in Nyssa, not far from Elmer and Mona Cruson.

They were happily married until December 1996 when Robert passed away.
